Austin gets $13.4M for affordable housing

Austin received $13.4 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to support community development and produce more affordable housing.
The Austin grants are part of $59 million in funding committed to Texas counties and cities. The types of grants distributed were community development block grants, home investment partnerships, emergency shelter grants and housing opportunities for persons with AIDS.
Other local governments receiving grants include Bexar County, Brownsville, Edinburg, Harlingen, Laredo, McAllen, Mission, Pharr, Round Rock, San Antonio, San Benito, San Marcos, Victoria and Williamson County.
“This funding represents HUD’s continuing investment in helping our local partners improve their communities,” Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan said. “If we hope to lay the groundwork for sustainable growth and prosperity in the future, it’s critical that we help state and local communities to make the needed improvements and to produce more affordable housing.”
